music video theoretical focus

music video theory summary:
Richard dyer's star theory- This theory explores the formation of a star, often in a music video. It notes that there are 3 key elements to being a star- construction, ideology and commodity. When these are applied a star is formed as a product of the cultural and economic process. However it is important to consider the paradox of a star in media whereby they have to be ordinary vs extraordinary and present vs absent.
Goodwin's music video theory- This theory suggests all music videos follow the same structure and conventions. These are Genre characteristics, lyrics and visuals, music and visuals, close ups and motifs and intertextual references. These elements can be found in all music videos ad show the consistently in genre conventions.
example of music video using these elements:
cant catch me now music video by Olivia Rodrigo on behalf of the Hunger games: ballad of songbird and snake film release.

This is the opening scene of the music video and allows an immediate construction of the 'star' persona. Fan will be gratified and excited to see her reference and therefore this aligns to the view of a 'star' as a commodity as fans will consume the media due to Olivia's mention

Below reflects Goodwin's genre conventions and characteristics of a music video. Olivia is depicted as playing her instrument and singing the song lyrics- joining lyrics and visuals- allowing audiences to feel involved in the video's construction.
