24/11/25 article ;whats the big idea mr bond?
article summary
- notions skyfall
- film incompasses the 2 main ideas via use of postmodernism and Sigmund Freud's oedipus theory.
postmodernist application
- merges fiction with references to real events - 'is it real or not' fantasy dimension eg Bond arrives in busy London after just fighting a terrorist on the underground
- blurs fact and fiction - intertextual eg bbc news anxhor Huw Edwards appeares in cameo role
- post modern texts are playful
-means to describe the character of the modern world
-film reflects changing nature of real world conflict from state on state binary opposition to faceless and fanatical threat
-often self referential
skyfall script references the story of oedipus - a greek myth
-uses a child to describe a mother fixated child
what i have learnt ?
I have learnt in media texts it is incredibly common to use and apply the post modern theory. In the James Bond franchise, post moderniism acts as an anchor to meaning allowing the reference to older texts and also developing characters and plot in relation to the modern world.
how can i relate it?
when completing my Alevel coursework i feel it would be useful to apply post modernism -whether to the magazine front cover/website - as a way of reflecting social and cultural zeitgeist and changes to our 'hyper real world'.
29/11/25 shelter advert ''Our house. Its not a home''
In this video Shelter has depicted the impact of housing costs and rent on the life of a family. Portrayed via the young child's perspective -acting as the dominant speaker- this allows the audience to understand the dvestating effect of homeslessness and housing struggles on a child especially with its impact on family life and the break down of relationships.
Alturism - the act of doing something without the expectation of a reward is shown via shelter's appeal for donations and call for action- reinforced by the emotive mode of address by the young boy.
Shelter reinforces pro social behaviours by defining their videos through a call for action to help others and not a commercial profit.
30//11/25 Dixon Reading Van Zoonen's feminist theory
concept 1 the female body as a spectacle
-the role of women in society and expectations varys based on historical periods and culture
-the dominant rep in western society is that women are an 'erotic spectacle'
second wave feminists = challenge dominance of men in society
third wave feminists = reasserted the right of women to occupy traditional female roles
fourth wave feminists = challenge the male priviledge using mass media and social media
concept 2 masculinity in the media
- masculine depicition is not subject to the same objectification of women
-male social dominance is reinforced via male/masculine representation
This reading has allowed me to understand the different elements and influence of masculinity on how women are shown.
